Share Your Summer Adventures On Instagram

instagramYou may recall that last Summer I shared some pictures on this site of some of the farmers’ market and other fun summer ‘food’ adventures I had last year. This year I’d like to do things a little differently and ask you to join in the fun. Take pictures this Summer of you and your company in action, of great Summer produce, of farmers’ market booths, or anything else food and food business related that catches your eye using Instagram and tag it #smallfoodbiz13. Do You Know What Spice This Is?

zanzibar spice tourWhile in Africa I had the opportunity to visit Zanzibar, an East African archipelago off of Tanzania’s mainland.  Zanzibar is actually made up of 52 islands, many of which are so well known for their spice plantations that the island chain is sometimes referred to as the Spice Islands.  How could I, I figured, visit the Spice Islands and not do a spice tour?  What I learned surprised me. Artisan Food Producer Giveaway…

This is what we call a ‘teaser.’  On Monday I’ll be announcing this site’s first ever giveaway and I gotta say it’s a good one.  To come up with something appropriate I literally asked a number of chefs I know what their favorite kitchen tool is and it was a tie between two great products.  No, you don’t get both items.  I’m picking one now and saving the other for another time.  But trust me, you don’t want to miss this.  So check back on Monday and see how you can be entered to win.  Have a great weekend!

Refusing To Let Go Of Summer (PHOTOS)

Cinnamon – Sweetener of Goods & Destroyer of Ants

cinnamon antsJust as all the Fall clothing catalogues showing people happily wearing fleece pullovers and knee-high boots arrive at my house, so does Summer.  Finally, while the rest of you have been baking in heat wave after heat wave, the thermometer cracked 80+ degrees here in the Pacific Northwest.  With the glorious heat and sunshine though also comes ants… Read more

Finding New Food Products

Does anyone know what this product is?  It looks like it has chocolate but at the same time looks like a hamburger?  Chocolate hamburgers perhaps?  Though that doesn’t sound like an appetizing combo…

The reason I ask is because I found it in a local Asian food store the other day when I went in to browse and, driven by curiosity, I just had to buy it.

My First Recipe

my first recipeOver the weekend I got an email from my Dad (Happy Father’s Day!) who, when going through some of my Great Aunt’s belongings, found a letter I’d sent her back when I must have been 8 or 9 years old.  Included in the letter was a recipe for French Toast I’d sent along.  I have no recollection of actually sending this or why I was so fascinated with French Toast at the time but kind of fun to see what might have been my first ever recipe.
